Mardi Gras

Uncategorized

The name Mardi Gras conjures up images of drunken, bead-wearing revelers dancing through the streets of New Orleans. With the festival coming up fast, here are some quick facts about the Mardi Gras celebration.
Mardi Gras, which is French for Fat Tuesday is the final day of the weeks-long Carnival season of feasting and celebration. First celebrated in 1730s, Mardi Gras was nothing like today’s wild party celebration of today. In Louisiana, Mardi Gras is actually a holiday. (Thank you Governor Warmoth who signed the “Mardi Gras Act” in 1875) That infamous purple, green and gold color combination actually represents something. Purple represents justice, green faith and gold power. And the tradition of parades and throwing beads? That began in the 1830s with street processions of masked revelers on horseback or in carriages. Today, they are convoys of elaborate floats featuring costumed characters throwing plastic bead necklaces into the crowd.
Now that you’re an expert on the fabulous holiday of Mardi Gras don’t forget to join in on the festivities on February 16th.
